Thermal Base Paper

Thermal base paper is a specialty base paper designed for heat-sensitive (thermal) coating — the substrate coating lines turn into receipt rolls, thermal labels and medical recording paper. Supercalendered to a high, even smoothness with controlled surface absorption, it gives the thermal coat a clean, stable base to sit on.

What is thermal base paper

Thermal base paper is the raw stock on which heat-sensitive coatings are applied. For the coat to lie evenly and develop cleanly when printed, the base is supercalendered to a high, level smoothness, made with controlled water absorption so the coating is held on the sheet rather than soaking into it, and kept clean and high-white so printed marks stay sharp and show-through stays low. It is a dedicated grade for thermal coating — not a general label facestock.

Key material properties

• High, even smoothness. A supercalendered, defect-free surface lets the thermal coat spread evenly and develop uniformly.
• Controlled ink absorption. Cobb water absorption is held within a tight range, so the coat stays on the surface, penetration is limited and coat-weight efficiency is improved.
• Mechanical strength. Good tensile and burst strength keep the web running cleanly through coating, drying, rewinding and slitting at high speed.
• Whiteness and opacity. A clean, high-white, high-opacity base keeps printed characters crisp and prevents show-through from the reverse side.
• Coating adhesion and stability. The surface holds the thermal coat with firm adhesion and no peeling, supporting even development and stable shelf life in the finished paper.
