What is label facestock base paper
A self-adhesive label is built in three layers: the face material (the facestock) on top that carries the printed design, a layer of adhesive in the middle, and a silicone-coated release liner underneath that protects the adhesive until the label is applied. The paper on this page is the starting base for that top printed layer; the base papers for the release liner on the back form a separate family (see the related pages below). As a face-stock base, the sheet has to print cleanly on its face, take an even coat or print, stay flat through lamination with the adhesive and liner, and die-cut and dispense reliably at speed.
Key material properties
- High smoothness for even printing. A supercalendered, finely formed surface takes ink uniformly, so text, barcodes and fine graphics stay crisp and sharp.
- Controlled ink absorption. A level, well-sized surface gives predictable ink holdout and drying across the web, so colour stays consistent through the run.
- Strong surface, low powdering and linting. A well-bonded, dust-resistant surface keeps fibres and coating particles from lifting during printing and die-cutting, so plates, dies and machinery stay clean.
- Uniform caliper and flatness. Consistent thickness across the web and stable, warp-free paper give an even coating or adhesive layer and support clean high-speed die-cutting.
- Strength for converting. The web carries enough mechanical strength to run steadily through coating, printing, lamination and die-cutting without breaking or distorting.
- Compatibility with coatings, adhesives and laminates. The face accepts face-stock coatings and print, bonds dependably to adhesive systems, and die-cuts cleanly without delamination.
