Tape Base Paper

Tape base paper is a strong, uniform specialty base paper we supply in rolls to tape converters and coating lines. It is the substrate behind adhesive tapes: once coated or impregnated with adhesive, it becomes carton-sealing tape, crepe masking tape, medical tape and protective tapes. The base sheet carries the adhesive layer and takes the mechanical stress of unwinding, slitting and in-use peeling, so its strength, smoothness and absorbency largely set the performance of the finished tape.

What is tape base paper

Tape base paper is the paper carrier that holds the adhesive layer of an adhesive tape. It is delivered as a clean, well-formed base sheet: converters coat or impregnate it with a pressure-sensitive, water-based or solvent adhesive, then slit the coated web into finished rolls of tape. What the buyer is choosing is the sheet underneath the adhesive — its job is to run smoothly on a high-speed coating line and to keep the finished tape strong, flat and easy to handle in use.

Key material properties

• Strength and toughness. The sheet resists breaking under the tension of coating, slitting and unwinding, and holds up to the shearing and peeling a tape meets when it is applied and removed.
• Smooth, uniform surface. An even surface and consistent formation let the adhesive spread at a controlled, uniform coat weight — which shows up as even adhesion and a clean appearance across the finished tape.
• Balanced absorbency and air permeability. Moderate absorbency helps water-based adhesives wet out and dry evenly, while a permeable sheet structure avoids curl and over-drying on the coating line.
• Chemical and dimensional stability. The base does not discolour or react with adhesive systems, and stays dimensionally stable in storage, so the coated tape keeps its properties over time.
• Renewable, recyclable paper backing. As a paper-based carrier, tape base paper offers a natural, recyclable alternative to plastic-film backings wherever the application allows.
