Water-based Coated Food Service Board

Water-based coated food service board is a food-grade paperboard with a water-based (aqueous) barrier coating on one or both sides, supplied in rolls or sheets. It is the forming base behind takeout trays, lunch boxes, paper bowls and other food-service containers — the board converters die-cut, crease and fold into finished food packaging. The coating does the job a PE lamination used to do, adding grease and moisture resistance to the formed container without a plastic film.

Key material properties

• Grease and moisture barrier. The water-based coating forms a dense barrier on the board surface that resists oil soak-through and liquid absorption, so a formed container stays dry, rigid and leak-free with oily food (fried chicken, pizza) or moisture-rich contents (fruit, salad).
• Forming and converting. The high-strength food-grade base die-cuts, creases and folds cleanly into trays, boxes and bowls, and holds its shape through filling, stacking and transport.
• Heat-sealing and hot-food tolerance. The coating stays stable through heat-sealing and holds up to freshly cooked hot food, so containers can be closed and served without the film softening or the board losing its shape. The working limit depends on the basis weight and coating, so the grade is matched to the end use.
• Printability. The smooth board surface carries high-quality colour printing for brand logos and product graphics.
• Food-contact safety. Made from food-grade materials, the coated board meets international food-contact safety requirements; compliance documentation for review is available offline on request.
• Recyclability. In professional paper-recycling systems a water-based coating separates from the fibre more easily than a PE film — one reason converters and food brands use it as a plastic-reduction material for food packaging.

How to choose and order

Food service board is matched to the job by basis weight and coating. Heavier grades give stiffer, stronger trays and boxes; one-side coating suits dry or short-contact contents, while two-side coating suits greasy or moist food and longer holding times.
