Water-Based Coated Cupstock Board

Water-based coated cupstock board is a food-grade paperboard whose surface carries a water-based (aqueous) barrier coating instead of a plastic PE film. It is the substrate behind hot and cold drink paper cups: cup converters die-cut, crease and heat-seal the coated board into cup bodies and bottoms, relying on the coating to keep the drink from soaking through the paper.

What is water-based coated cupstock board

Cupstock is a heavier food-grade paperboard built to be formed and heat-sealed into cups. In this grade the board is coated on-machine with a water-based dispersion instead of being laminated with PE. The coating dries to a continuous barrier with no separate plastic layer, so the board stays printable, creases cleanly at fold lines and heat-seals reliably on high-speed cup-forming equipment.

Key material properties

• Leak and moisture barrier. The aqueous coating stops liquid from soaking through the board, so a filled cup does not weep, soften or wet its outside surface.
• Hot- and cold-drink performance. The coating holds hot drinks such as coffee and tea at serving temperature, and it helps keep the condensation of a cold drink off the cup's outer surface — the cup and its sleeve stay dry.
• Grease resistance. The coated surface resists oil and grease, suiting creamy, milky or oily drinks.
• Converting and heat-sealing. The coating lies flat and uniform, does not crack when the board is creased and rolled, and heat-seals consistently for secure cup-bottom sealing on fast lines.
• Print surface. The smooth coated surface carries high-quality colour printing for cup branding.
• Food-contact safety. Food-grade cupstock meets food-contact safety requirements for paper and board that touches food; documentation for compliance review is available offline on request.
