What is water-based coated placemat paper
Placemat paper starts from a clean paper base and is coated with a thin aqueous layer on the printing side. Unlike solvent-based systems, the water-based coating keeps volatile organic compound (VOC) content low, so the finished sheet has little odour and suits food-contact tabletop use. What matters to the buyer is what the coated sheet does in service: it keeps food oils and moisture from soaking through to the table, holds up under hot plates and freshly served food, and takes bright printed artwork without smearing.
Key material properties
- Grease and water resistance. The dense coating barrier stops food oil, sauce and moisture passing through to the plate or table beneath, so the placemat stays clean and leaves no residue.
- Resistance to hot food. The coated surface withstands contact with hot plates and freshly served food without melting or warping in ordinary service. The practical limit depends on the base paper's grammage and the coating chosen, so the grade is matched to the end use.
- Printability. The smooth coated surface takes bright graphics and brand logos with clean edges and good ink holdout — the basis for custom branding, promotional and event placemats.
- Clean converting. The coated sheet slits, cuts and die-cuts cleanly without the coating cracking or dusting at the cut edge, so finished mats run well on automatic packing lines.
