What drains into a shrimp pack is not what drains into a meat pack. There is no cut muscle releasing exudate; the liquid is melt water and brine, arriving continuously from the ice rather than once at packing. That changes both the volume the pad has to handle and the conditions it has to survive. This guide separates the two liquid sources, sets out what each one demands, and gives a table for matching pad to goods.

1. The liquid is melt water and brine, not exudate

  • Ice is the source. Fresh shrimp are packed on or under ice, and that ice melts for as long as the pack is cold. The pad's total load is set by the ice, not by the weight of the shrimp.
  • Glaze behaves the same way later. Frozen shrimp carry a protective ice layer that melts on the way to the customer, so a pack that never "leaked" can still arrive wet.
  • Brine is not fresh water. Salt in the melt water keeps it liquid below 0 °C and leaves dissolved material behind when it dries, on the pad surface and on the tray.

So the useful specification question is not "how much liquid does shrimp release" but "how much ice is in this pack, and what is dissolved in the melt".

2. Two consequences for the pad

  • Continuous delivery, not a one-off. A meat pad is sized for liquid released at packing. A shrimp pad has to keep working through the whole cold life of the pack, which is why speed of take-up matters as much as total capacity.
  • Prolonged contact with brine. The top sheet has to hold its wet strength while sitting in salt water for days. A sheet that weakens in prolonged contact does not fail gracefully — it comes apart.

Both of these are construction questions rather than size questions, which is why a larger meat pad is not the answer here.

3. Choosing by goods type

Directions rather than figures, because the ice load and the pack format both vary. Where the question is the wider seafood range rather than shrimp specifically, seafood absorbent pads covers it, and the single product page sits under aquatic seafood absorbent pad. Where the pack also needs active cooling rather than only drainage, ice packs covers that product.

4. Where shrimp pack specifications go wrong

  • Sizing the pad on the product weight. The load comes from the ice. A pack with more ice produces more liquid regardless of how much shrimp is in it.
  • Using a meat pad. It is built for a one-off release and for water, not for days of brine.
  • Forgetting the glaze. A frozen pack is not a dry pack. Glaze melt arrives at the destination, which is often the worst possible time.
  • Ignoring the tray. If the tray does not drain and the pack is re-iced, the pad is working against standing liquid from the start.

FAQ

Why does the pad not last the way it does in a meat pack?

Because the liquid keeps arriving. Ice melts for the whole cold life of the pack, so the pad is working continuously rather than once.

Does salt in the melt water matter?

It does. Brine stays liquid below 0 °C and leaves dissolved material behind as it dries, so the top sheet has to hold up in prolonged wet contact.

Is a bigger pad the answer?

Not on its own. Capacity helps, but the top sheet and the speed of take-up decide whether the pack stays presentable through a long cold chain.

What about frozen shrimp?

Glaze ice melts on the way, so the pack behaves like a fresh iced pack by the time it arrives. Size the pad for that, not for a dry frozen pack.
