Food-grade Greaseproof Paper

Food-grade greaseproof paper is an opaque base paper that resists oil and grease from the sheet itself — heavily refined pulp with sizing added in the pulp — so it holds back grease without a surface coating step. It is the stock converters print, sheet or slit into fast-food wraps, box and tray liners, interleaving sheets and bakery and confectionery wrapping paper.

What is food-grade greaseproof paper

Greaseproof base paper starts from clean, food-grade virgin pulp that is beaten (refined) heavily and sized inside the pulp. Heavy refining closes up the fibre web, so the finished sheet is naturally dense and grease-resistant — a property normally rated on the Kit scale, with our food grades at Kit 4–12. Because the oil barrier is built into the pulp rather than applied to the surface, no separate coating step is needed and the sheet keeps a natural, printable finish.

Supply variants

Food-grade greaseproof is supplied as three main variants:

• Standard greaseproof paper. An opaque, dense sheet for everyday fried-food and takeaway wrapping, supplied by grammage and colour.
• Fluorine-free (PFAS-free) greaseproof paper. The same pulp-sized construction without fluorochemical treatment, for brands that want to keep PFAS out of food packaging.
• Greaseproof paperboard. A stiffer white board grade that adds grease resistance and a smooth printing surface to boxes, trays and retail food packaging.

Key material properties

• Grease hold-out with no coating. Oil resistance is built in during pulping — heavy refining plus internal sizing — so the sheet resists grease without a surface film or coating pass. Rated Kit 4–12.
• Opaque, printable surface. The dense, even sheet prints cleanly and can carry direct printing for food wrappers, or be left in its natural white or brown tone.
• Strength and clean handling. The refined, well-bonded fibre gives the sheet good strength and clean folds, so it runs dependably through wrapping, sheeting and slitting lines.
• Food-contact safety. Food-grade grades meet international food-contact safety requirements; supporting documentation for compliance review is available offline on request.

Typical end uses

Because the grease barrier is in the sheet itself, food-grade greaseproof paper is commonly converted into:

• Fast-food and takeaway wrapping paper (burgers, fried chicken, chips)
• Bakery and confectionery wrappers and liners
• Box and tray liners for meal boxes and food trays
• Interleaving sheets between oily items (baked goods, sliced meats, fried foods)
• Sandwich and deli wraps

How to choose and order

Greaseproof base paper is specified by grammage, width and grease-resistance grade (Kit) to match the converting line and end use — a higher Kit grade for food that stays in contact with oil for longer, lighter grammages for wraps and interleaving, and the board grade for formed packaging. Where a printed white wrapper with a surface-coated grease barrier is preferred, the coated grade linked above is the alternative.
